Things to Do While On the Hook

Yes, we’re going on our third night anchored here in the Bustard Islands. While it’s a beautiful spot, we hadn’t intended in staying for so long. But there are certainly worse places to be. Our friends, Robert and Brenda from Over ICE, arrived yesterday afternoon and there are a handful of other Canadian boats here too.

A “High winds and waves” warning was issued yesterday for the Georgian Bay so we hunkered down in our little protected area overnight. After waking up this morning to relatively calm conditions, we thought maybe it wasn’t that bad. It took an hour to put everything away and pull the anchors and we headed out into the big water, only to turn around and come back about 30 minutes later. The rollers were about 6 feet making all of us uncomfortable, so we found a new backyard around the block from the old one.
This time we “rafted” the two boats which allows us to talk and get together without using the dinghies. First, we dropped our anchor and let out the chain, then the other boat drops an anchor about 50 feet from ours and lets out their chain. We both put out fenders and then use the thrusters to get the boats close enough to tie them and then we can walk back and forth easily.

Are you wondering what you do when you’re on a boat in the middle of nowhere with no TV, no roads, no shopping and limited internet? Here’s a few of the things we did during our time in the Bustards.

  • Explore in the Dinghy
  • Climb on the Rocks
  • Take out the Kayak
  • Do a load of laundry and hang to dry
  • Try to catch fish
  • Bake some bread
  • Do some paper work
  • Take naps
  • Wash the boat with lake water
  • Play on a friend’s Lilly pad in the ice cold water
  • Bake cookies
  • Visit the neighbors by dinghy or kayak
  • Finish a book
  • Practice Photography
  • Watch the full moon rise
  • Watch the rain come down
  • Have company over for dinner

If you are reading this post on Friday, it means we found our way out to someplace with cell service.
